"Don't let the fat chick beat you"?

I have been racing for about 5 years now. I am not a typical runner or even triathlete. I fight with serious medical conditions every step of the way, but each step makes me stronger. I have two boys both with special needs and I have learned to chalk that up to making me stronger as well.

It is with sad heart that I must report that lupus has won the battle this year, but trust me when I say the war is far from over! My racing days are not over by any stretch of the imagination. This is just a minor setback that will make me stronger.

Canyonlands 5-miler

Canyonlands is a little more than a normal race weekend.   We hit the road on Thursday morning; surprisingly we actually made it out the door right about the time I wanted! The drive out there was pretty uneventfully.  We decided to take a slightly different route into town, we went down the Colorado River instead of going I-70 to US-191.  It took a little bit longer but not enough to make any difference.
We got to our hotel and there was one person working the desk and three people wanting to check in, so it took a little while, but she was very friendly and very helpful.  Since it was about dinner time, we took a peek into our room and then went and got dinner at Zax. I was excited when I found out they have veggie burgers! Food was good.  We then hit “the town”!  After a little wondering we called it a night.  WAIT! We hit the pool and then called it a night!!!
Friday morning We had breakfast at Pancake Haus. Again, there was only one person working the floor so service was slow.  We could tell the poor guy was moving as fast as he could.  He was very apologetic about everything, but the food was good (they had egg whites!!!!).  Again, we slowly hit the town.  I decided to check my bank account and noticed I was a lot lower than I should have been!!! EXCUSE ME???? We had two reservations, one at Best Western Plus Greenwell Inn and Best Western Plus Canyonlands Inn. I had cancelled my reservations at the Canyonlands Inn, but I still got charged!!!! I called Best Western, and they told me I would get my money back but it wouldn’t be until the beginning the week, at the earliest.  That was NOT going to work (that was my food money)! So I called my bank.  I love them, I love them, I love them!  I explained the situation and the nice lady said she could release the funds back to my account if blah, blah, blah. So we walked over to the Canyonlands Inn (the nice bank lady was on the phone with me while I walked the whole block to get to the hotel).  I went into the front desk and I am SO glad I cancelled that reservation, talk about RUDE!  I need to contact Best Western and let them know about how bad the service was.  Anyway, long story short (after about a half hour of dealing with these people) the nice bank lady was able to release the funds back to my account and all was good again.
We did some more wondering and it was lunch time.   We went to Pasta Jay’s for lunch.  Luckily we avoided the rush, that place can get PACKED! We enjoyed a nice lunch outside, then it was time for packet pick-up.  It is a quaint little set-up, works great!  Because of my knee and back I had to down grade from the half marathon to the 5-miler.  Once I got my bib and goodie bag I checked out the comings and goings. After a little while it was back to the hotel and more pool time.
We had an awesome parking spot at the hotel so I wasn’t really fond of the idea of moving the truck to drive around such a small town.  We called Moab Brewery and placed an order for dinner.  It was about a mile away so we walked to pick it up (we knew everywhere would be a zoo so we weren’t going to dine in).  We get there, pick up the food, pay the standard 18% gratuity on pick-up orders (I say that is a bunch of bull), and head back to the hotel.  We get back and my dinner is not there!  I call them up and let them know we have food missing.  So we get in the truck and drive back there to pick it up.  Back at the hotel the chili we had ordered was burned, my food was greasy and on the gross side.  We had eaten there the first time we went to Moab, but I don’t remember it being that bad.  Not a place we will be returning.

Waiting for the start
Saturday morning was race morning! I got up nice and early, busses started at 7:30 so I was up at around 6:30.  I wore my White Paisley Capri Skirt from Running Skirts, a nice emerald green long sleeve shirt (that came off by Mile 1) and a black shirt over the top. I had plenty of green on!  Left the hotel at around 7:00 and slowly walked to the bus.  I realized about half way there I forgot my gum, but I did have my inhaler.  Oh and for breakfast I had a Luna Bar.  Got to the busses and I was on the first one up the canyon.  It was a little chilly up in the canyon, but then again I had plenty of layers on so I really had nothing to worry about.  At about 9:00/9:15 we started heading to the start line.  The gun went off a little early, but we began down the road with no issues.  I ended up walking most of it because I could not get my breathing under control (I need to talk to my doctor about that).  It was still a nice outing.
View from the start line
The views are amazing! I still wish I could have done the half, but my back and knee were very grateful I did the 5-miler.  Crossed the finish line, checked out the finish area activities.  We headed back to the hotel so I could wash off and get cleaned up.  I took a while getting organized before we headed out by the time we were out we were hungry! We figured we would stop by Slick Rock Café, we were seated quickly, yea, after being ignored for a while, we finally got water.  A while longer we had our order taken 20 minutes after that we still had not received our drinks let alone our food.  There was a table next to us who were in the same boat so we upped and left! We wondered a little bit more and returned to Zax for lunch.  Service was amazing! Food was great, they were insanely busy, but you couldn’t tell that by the time it took to get stuff. We did some more wondering and then back to the hotel for more pool time.
Sunday morning was entertaining.  I woke up before everyone else.  I tried turning the light on next to me, but it wouldn’t go on.  Ok, maybe I was just being stupid.  Tried turning the TV on, that wasn’t working.  We had a few lights on, so I figured I was just being slow.  I realized that most of the issues were on the same wall, so I went down to the office (in my jammies) to ask about the possibility of blowing a fuse.  Turned out the power was low all over town.  I went back to our room and everyone started showering.  Yea, power went completely out! Luckily I was not the one in the shower at the time!!!!! The power finally came back on, we finished getting everything out of the room and into the truck.  Across the street to Zax for breakfast, made a few last purchases, checked out of the hotel and hit the road.  The weather back was not as pleasant.  Actually we really didn’t want to stop because nasty weather was right on our heels and I did not want to be driving through the mountains in crappy weather.  We made it home picked up the babies and called it a weekend!

Take 5 in the Garden

The last time I ran this race was back in 2007 and I only ran it as a 5K, this time I did the 5-miler.  The morning was beautiful! The temperature was amazing, I mean really, you couldn’t ask for better weather!  I got to the start about an hour before the race (I like being nice and early).  The parking lot was a good distance from the start (which was very understandable); busses were provided if you didn’t want to hoof the distance (less than 2 miles).  As we pulled up I noticed there were only 10 port-a-potties.  With more than a half hour before the race the port-a-potty line was already out to the road (not a good sign).  The race finally started.  Luckily they started putting a start line down so your time didn’t start until you crossed.  I have said time and time again, I suck at hills (which is part of the reason my goal was so slow), nearly the first mile was uphill so I walked the majority of it.  The temperature was raising and the sun was beating down.  Finally we got to go downhill, the 5K-ers split off and the 5-milers kept going downhill and then some uphill, I was getting thirsty. It a race, they have water stops, I didn’t bring my own water (STUPID mistake!).  I get to the first water stop and they were tearing it down, no water was left! I was not the last person there was still at least a dozen plus behind me.  I trudged back up the hill, saw Coach Judy, posed for a picture made it to the second water stop and waited in line for a few drops of water, it was enough to keep me going.  Continued up the hill and to the next turn around point and then towards the finish line.  The last downhill before the finish line was finally right in front of me and there was a gal who was a good distance ahead of me I decided I would beat her! I started picking up more and more speed, I beat her! Thank God my sister was at the finish line, all I could get out was ‘no water on course’ she handed me her water bottle and I started drinking!  I would have to say the only saving grace to the race is the scenery.

The lack of port-a-potties and water seriously dropped it on my list.  There is no excuse for running out of water and even their site boasts of the number of runners and they only have 10 potties?  Not good!

Colorado Half Marathon (VERY LONG REPORT!!!!!)

So my race training run was a complete success! I went in with a plan and a goal, I stuck with my plan and met my goal!
Saturday morning we got all packed and loaded everyone in the car (yes, this included the puppies). I drive a bug! The suitcases and my running bag all went in the trunk (surprising spacious) the boys and the computers went into the back seat (I had homework I had to finish so the computers had to come) the puppies were told to go in the back seat too (Charlie can fit between my boys and Freddie sits wherever).  My sister got in the from seat and put her crap bag down by her feet.  Had had two stops before dropping the boys off at the doggy hotel, Walgreen, Cuervo needed more meds and the bank (we were running so late that had we dropped the boys off first the bank probably would have been closed and my sister doesn’t use an ATM card).  Freddie loves riding up front and if my sister is there he is even happier (he props himself on her chest). He is also a huge fan of the “roof window”.  Charlie had no problem sitting in back while we were at Walgreens then he felt it was necessary to come upfront for rest of the trip.   My poor sister was being squished the entire time (we also had to stop and get gas).  Luckily from the gas station to the bank is a fairly straight shot but it was very entertaining.  My bug is a standard and Charlie was sitting on the stick for part of the time.  When I told him if he doesn’t move I might change gears using one of this body parts he climbed even further onto my sister! The bank was interesting (my sister’s wallet was in her crap bag at her feet!).  We had a two second drive to the doggy hotel when we finished at the bank.  Finally the boys were unloaded! They were excited to be there (as always) we didn’t even get any good bye kisses.  Finally it was time to hit the road!
We made it to Fort Collins with no issues, got to the host hotel, again with no issues, parked and went in.  The expo is improving each and every time.  I got my bag to put all my stuff in, grabbed some of the goodies (the goodie bags were not pre-packed), picked up my bib and then got my shirt.  I made sure I stopped by the Country Financial table to say thank you! And we joked about not doing the marathon, the whole week and a half notice thing…  Of course I had to stop by the official merchandise area, picked up body glide (couldn’t remember if I had packed it so we figured better safe than sorry [I had packed it]), gloves, a long sleeve shirt, a sweatshirt, compression socks (first pair, man do I love them), another pair of toe socks, and I want to say something else, but I don’t remember! Checked out the other booths (very small, but in a good way).  Found a booth with a shirt that said “Pain is only a state of mind” so I had to get it.  After that we headed out.  Found the hotel with minimal issues (I couldn’t remember the name of it for a while).  Then headed to dinner, but first had to find the parking area for the morning.  Found it, off to Olive Garden.  I ordered the eggplant parm.  The nice waiter brought me extra pasta (hey, there wasn’t very much pasta!!!). After that we stopped by King Soopers (Kroger) to get my breakfast and other misc stuff.  Then back to the hotel.  I laid out my stuff and realized I forgot my knee band.  My wonderful sister delaired we would zoom up the street and pick up new ones.  She knew if I did not have them I would need them.  And last weekend my knee buckled a few times.  So we flew to Sports Authority and picked up new knee bands (Shannon you are a very wise woman!!!!).  Got back, took a bath watched TV and went to sleep (had a wakeup call, my sister’s phone set and the alarm clock set).
3:45 came EARLY! I hit snooze! J Next BEEP! BEEP! I got up.  I got dressed heated up the water for the oatmeal, said goodbye to everyone and headed out the door with my sister making sure I had everything. I get half way to the parking garage and realize I did not put on my RoadID, crap.  Get even closer and I don’t have my gum, fine, I will just go to a gas station and get more,  I finally fine one that is opened and pull in to park and realize I don’t have my purse. The only thing I have with me in my driver’s license.  DAMN! I remember that I usually keep gum in my car, somewhere!  So I go to the parking garage, I am still about 10 minutes early for the half marathon busses. I get comfy on the bench and wait.  The busses finally start to load and up we go.  I try to get a little more sleep, but the gal next to me keeps messing with her iPod and the light from it keeps waking me up.  We get up to the waiting area, first thing is first, POTTY!  I start eating my bagel and meet this local gal, Becky, who is running her first half and we stand around and chat.  Start time is getting closer so I get back in line for the potty.  I find a comfy area to start stretching and find Becky again and we continue chatting, the emotions are flying with this poor gal.  She can’t believe she is really doing this and we all know how it is!  I let her know it is an amazing course, there is really only one hill we have 5 hours to complete it in and so on and so forth (not downplaying the magnitude of what she is about to do but putting her nerves at ease a little).  We get to the start and all of a sudden people are running! WHAT? No BEEEEEEP!? No nothing! I step off to the side because all my electronics weren’t ready! I am finally ready to go and off I go.  I had planned the first two hours I was going to run two songs and walk one.  The third hour walk one, run one and anything after three hours I will listen to the same two songs over and over and over and over until I do finish (my goal was 3 hours!).  Mile one, was wonderful, my lower back was a little sore at first but then came around.  Mile two… Hey, there’s Ted’s! Woo-hoo!  Ok, there is that damn hill, hmm, according to the music I will be running part of it.  Up the hill, no issue! Thank you Judy! You are a wonderful woman I will never grumble around training runs in Garden of the Gods again! Hey! I am halfway done.  Oh! Look more marathoners are passing me.  Yay! There is the first female! WOW! I am at the bridge already, and I am running across it!  5K left, alright! Hey, I might just make my 3 hour goal!  Everything is still feeling fine, ok, I have still having issues with hydration.  One mile left! Yay! I am around the corner and there is the finish line! I will run, ooo, not feeling so well, I will walk until the stop sign.  HERE I COME! I AM DONE WITH TIME TO SPARE!!!!! Faster, so close to the finish line, even faster. Come on Sammie, you can sprint the last little bit… I’M DONE!!!!!
I start coughing and gagging, uh-oh! No, no, no.  There are no trash cans, there are people everywhere, can’t do this. NO! coughing more, no, no, no.  I managed to leave the finish area with dignity intact, but still no trash can, oh look! A cute dog.  Went over squatted down and said hi (with permission of course).  Feeling better, ok, I am fine now.  Grab by bag from the bag drop, found my sister and my kids got hugs from my kids (they are very kind little guys). Finally found my car and re went back to the hotel.  My left foot was hurting in a weird way, left hip flexor was sore, second toe on right foot will probably fall off. Other than that I feel good. I took a nice LONG shower (that hotel had some amazing water pressure!) check out time was noon we turned our keys in at 11:57 (ish) and hit the road.  We made great time coming home.  Picked up the boys (there were happy to see us), my sister and Cuervo cheated, they went to the store next door while Jose and I brought the boys home.  Grabbed the truck, picked up my sister and Cuervo and did our weekly grocery shopping.  Finally we made it home and I crashed!  I am sure I was asleep before 9!  I slept well having my boys on either side of me (yes, I share my bed with my fur kids).
The weather was perfect, cool, but not cold.  Mostly cloudy (I had 100 spf on, but I still reacted to the sun that was out), all in all I am very proud of the run! Good training run!

I have to say, none of this would have been possible if it weren't for my sister.  Shannon, you are the most amazing person!

Grand Prix of Running 5K on St Patrick’s Day Race Report

Thursday afternoon I went zooming downtown between work and school to pick up my stuff for Saturday’s 5K. Since I was downtown I just had to stop at Wooglins (I ordered my usual and ended up with meat in my chili, I was very upset!). I went into Runner’s Roost to get my stuff and I was in and out of there within two minutes (good thing too; the parking meter only had three minutes on it!). Sadly the packet included a shirt, a bib and a few ads. In the past they have done a lot better, but no big deal.

Saturday morning wake up was at 7:00 with an 8:00 departure (race started at 10:00). I put on my Brooks tights and my Running Skirt green plaid running skirt. Then it was time for a shirt, for whatever reason I will not wear (or even try on) a race shirt until after I have completed the race. Cuervo was so excited when he found my green running shirt so I put on. I had to wear normal running socks since I had an actual pair of tights on (my sister took the time and energy to find me a pair of green tights, I was going to wear them!). Amazingly we were out the door by 8!!! We stopped and got breakfast on the way downtown and we got there with plenty of time (we get there early for a reason!). Pulled into the parking garage, found a perfect spot that I backed into, when we left all I had to do was pull forward and head down the ramp, no worries about crazy drivers coming whipping around the corner.

We slowly wondered down to the park and the boys played on the playground for a while. Hit the porta potty a time or two and at about 9:45 I headed towards the start line. A little after 10 we were sort of off and running, then we stopped again! I finally started the start mats (first time they have had those) and off I went. I told myself three minutes running, one minute walking. My nifty Forerunner made sure I knew when I was time to start running and when it was time to walk. I was not shooting for any particular time (besides under 40:00) so when I crossed the finish line at 37 and some change I was happy. I wasn’t tired, I hadn’t needed my inhaler (that I did not have with me), nothing was hurting, I felt really good!

One weekend 42.4 miles

Once again I manged to make it through another Goofy Challenge. Actually I completed the Dopey Challenge; I did Goofy plus the 5k! All in all it was a great race weekend.

Friday, we woke up at around 4am, we got on the bus around 5 and hung out at the start line until the race started at 7am. Cuervo was up with me and Jose was back with my sister. As soon as we hit the start line Cuervo took off (kind of expected that). I stuck to my plan. I was going to run/walk, take it nice and easy. I stopped to get a picture with Little Chef (the rat from Ratatouille), got the the finish line feeling great, got my medal, my snack bag and started looking from everyone else. While I was in the picture line Jose found me. I stopped at a security guard and asked for help finding Cuervo (mention the words 'bipolar' and 'no meds yet' people get very helpful!). My sister finished and sent me a text letting me know that she had seen Cuervo (he was cheering her on as she crossed the finish line) but didn't know where he had gone. We started really looking for him (a little on the panicked side), I found someone who was willing to page him, but got a text from my sister saying she has him and we are all good and he was fine (he didn't start freaking out, which is something he has been known to do). We got back to the room, all cleaned up and continued with out day!

Saturday we woke up at a disgusting time (2am), we were on the bus by 3 am. I decided to wear my CW-X tights, with Nike pants over the top with a Under Armor bra and shirt. The race send off was great; fireworks and the works! I have to say, this is one of my favorite courses. Again, I took it nice and slow, I kept a very close eye on how much water I was drinking (I have to be very careful not to over hydrate, on the same token, I have to make sure I don't get dehydrated). I had my sharkies with me, I had forgotten about them until about mile 8. I crossed the finish line feeling good. Ok, my feet were a little sore (my heel has been pissy lately).

Sunday morning was another morning of waking up at an obscene time. Once again, everyone got up at 2 am, on the bus by 3. Both mornings I did get the marathon breakfast boxes (banana, bagel, peanut butter, water and granola bar). I wore my new Running Girl capri running skirt (I know, you shouldn't wear anything new on race day, I was already chafing from Saturday, I didn't care!), my “Chick Interrupted” t-shirt and my CW-X bra. I felt great the first 10 miles. I was still feeling strong my mile 13. I started having issues about 15 or so, my knee got a little grouchy. Mile 20 my feet were starting to get mad. I met a gentleman who did the Boulder Boulder, talked to him for a little ways. I was at Mile 21 before I knew it (mile 20 – 21 was the boring mile). I was at mile 23 and met a nice kid who said pretty soon he will prove a lot of people wrong (Tyler had been told by a lot of people that he would not be able to complete a marathon). My iPod and my watch both died before left him. I started pacing a local runner who had also done all three races. We talked to each other until we hit the finish area, I had to do my usual sprint across the line. Yes, I am suffering from some very uncomfortable chaffing, I have had to wear my knee brace the past few days and my feet (mostly my heels) are very sore but I feel good. I am glad I did it, I wish that I didn't deal with a flare up this past October/November, but I over came it.

I was very slow all three races, but I am glad I took it easy, I am glad I knew my body was not at 100% and, for once, I listened to it.

Next on my agenda is a century ride, but that isn't for a few months. I will not be running another marathon until October. I am kind of excited turning my focus to another spot, but I will still be putting in a few miles each week. I will also be adding swimming back in, assuming my shoulder plays nice.

Finished Week 4!!!!

I had a great ‘race report’ and ‘race review’ write up, but my computer ate it! I will try again!
I am going to see if I can find it, but if I can’t then I will retype the whole thing! I can say I PR’d (but then again, this was only my second 10K and it was a pretty flat course!) I will say, without a shadow of a doubt, this was an awesome race!
This entire weekend seemed to by my bad luck with electronics weekend. Saturday (at the race) my Nike+ sensor decided it didn’t now want to work (no big deal). Right before Mile 6 I looked down at my Garmin and saw a blank screen. ARE YOU SERIOUS??? When I started the race I had a 56% charge, which should have been fine! When I got home I plugged it in and it said I had a 34% charge, then why the hell did you die on me? Sunday, I got up, got to my long run start, again, my Nike+ sensor decided it didn’t want to work, my watch was fully charge and I was ready to go. Mile 9.something I iPod went nuts on me. So I finished off the remainder of my 13 miles with no music (for my long runs right now I run a song, walk a song). I finished my run, but I was a little miffed!
I have now completed a month of training; I completed 95% of the training miles. I only have 3 more months to go! Yes, I am overly excited!
I went to my pain and torture appointment on Friday and I told the doc that my shoulder blade has been pissy, so after my neck massage (ok, it isn’t a neck massage, he is trying to get my spine to loosen up and sometimes it does hurt!) I told me to roll on my side and started messing with my shoulder blade. As soon as he started on my shoulder he started making noises. You know, it is never a good thing when a PT (doc or therapist) make those types of sounds! I asked him if I had a really bad knot back there or something and he told me that my scapula is stuck! WHAT? He explained that he should be able to put his fingers under my scapula (he won’t use shoulder blade cause it isn’t the correct term!) but he can’t do it on that side. So he messed with it for a while. Luckily there was a fish tank within my line of sight otherwise I am sure I would have been in tears. That hurts, I know he was trying to be gentle, but ouch! Part of my would like an x-ray of my back just so I know what the hell is going on back there, but right about now I really don’t want to hear more bad medical news. I can only take one bad thing per year. The thing is, I can swim just fine. I can run fine, so I think ignorance is bliss right now!

Sunday, June 6, 2010

So today was the big day.

Wake up was started at 3:00 (I know, that is just obscene!) I think I actually made it out of bed at 3:30. I decided I would wear my Nike capris over my CW-X tights, I wore my toe socks, I had on SkirtSports top, but it was under my “Does this shirt make my butt look fast” shirt. I was out of the room by about 3:45 and on the bus by 3:55. The ride to the start line wasn't very long, which was nice. We got up there, first stop potty! Then I sat down and had breakfast; 2 hard boil eggs, a bagel and a banana, then back to the potty. I think I hit the potty a total of 4 times before I crossed the start line. I had to make another stop at a potty around Mile 4. For the first few miles I would run every other song. By mile 5ish I was only running 1 song every mile (I promised my doctor I would walk the entire way, but I am sorry, that is not possible for me to do) Mile 9 I started having some serious issues. My fingers had been swollen since Mile 5 and they weren't getting any better. I called my sister for advice, but I think it was a good thing that she didn't answer. My right foot felt like one of my bones was popping out of my foot (this is how it felt back in August/September time frame last year), my knee was hurting. My hands were so swollen they were red (you know the stage past red). The heat was seriously kicking my ass (you would figure a race in San Diego would have some awesome views, but this was mostly on the streets that not only had no shade the view sucked the majority of the time, but I will get to that later).

When I finally got a hold of my sister we agreed that I didn't come all this way not to finish. When I hit the half way mark I realized there was no way in hell was I going back to work and not being able to say I had finished. I stopped and got some Motrin or Tylenol or what ever they were handing out. They were pushing salt on everyone, but know how my body reacts I didn't touch any! I was drinking way to much water, but I was so thirsty it wasn't even funny. We finally got to an area that was scenic and a nice breeze was coming off the bay or the ocean, but still no shade! Mile 20 (I think) we got to Fiesta Island, who ever planned the route seriously needs to look at other races. Finally Mile 24, then 25. Mile 25 was where I started having issues that brought tears to my eyes. I kept having pain shooting around my ankle. I think my saving grace was the fact I had sunglasses on, if any of the Team in Training coaches or the paramedics had seen just how much pain I was in they would have stopped me. Mile 26 had finally come the pain was still there, but at that point I didn't care. Mile 26.1 I managed to pick up the speed, not as much as usually, but I still picked it up all the same.

All in all I would not recommend this race.

Yes, the race support was great, there were even sideliners who had food. The lady with the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches showed just in time. There were others who had pretzels, liquorish and I have no idea what else. The water stations were well staffed – could have used more ice. There were no oranges for us slower people. The course, I am sorry, but we are in an amazing locations and the majority of the damn course was on black top surrounded by buildings (houses and stores and zzzzzzz). There was minimal shade along the course route. I am thinking the Big Sur marathon would have been a better choice.

After the race was the nightmare of trip to getting back to the hotel. I ended up going to SeaWorld with my sister and my boys and waited for an hour and a half until the SeaWorld pick-up bus came. We got into the park and got food, then the kiddos got to go play on some playground thing.

I guess right now, I can saw I finished and that is about it. I did get more sun than I should have (yes, I put sunscreen on), I can not flex my left foot towards me, I am hoping that will be all better tomorrow. I have chaffing in a very personal area and under my arms (I have never chaffed there before). I didn't take very many pictures, but there was really nothing to see!
