"Don't let the fat chick beat you"?

I have been racing for about 5 years now. I am not a typical runner or even triathlete. I fight with serious medical conditions every step of the way, but each step makes me stronger. I have two boys both with special needs and I have learned to chalk that up to making me stronger as well.

It is with sad heart that I must report that lupus has won the battle this year, but trust me when I say the war is far from over! My racing days are not over by any stretch of the imagination. This is just a minor setback that will make me stronger.

Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my Gosh!

20 Apr 12
I almost feel like a little kid getting ready for Christmas… Six months from right now I will be in the middle of my first FULL iron distance triathlon.  After this week of training (which isn’t even complete yet) I am feeling really good about this race.

I realize today is only Friday, but I would put this week of training WAY up there on the scale of awesomeness.  So far I have more than 11 miles on the treadmill, 2 ½ miles in the pool and an butt kicker of a spin class done.  I had planned on hitting a yoga class today, but the day got filled with medical stuff, which isn’t a bad thing.  Tomorrow is my long run, I am supposed to meet with the ladies of the BRC Fit group, but I am not sure my lungs would be happy if I tried to do a long run in Garden of the Gods, so I might just hit my favorite trail and keep it nice and easy.  Sunday depending on how I am feeling, I will either head up north to cheer on a friend or I will hit the trails on my bike.  I guess we will have to see.

Six months… You hear me???? SIX MONTHS… I can’t wait!

Oh! And I have successfully written down everything I have consumed to far this week AND only had one soda a day!

Please keep them in your prayers!

Toys!

16 Apr 12

I am not sure how runners/triathletes survived all those years ago.  I mean, when I first started running there was no such thing as an iPod!  Ok, when I first started running seriously anything over a half a mile was just plain straight out stupid! I was a sprinter, give me a break! When I started going further distances I had a nifty little Walkman!  But really I didn’t run with it often, then there was the diskman which really wasn’t conducive for running because the CD would skip.  Six years ago I got my grubby little hands on my very first iPod, ok, it was my sister’s but she was nice enough to share!  We have always had watches, and now we have GPS watches that can do all but do the running for you!  Heart rate monitors, moisture wicking clothes…

People complain about how boring running is without music, which by the way is against USAT regulations (the running with music part, they could care less if you find it boring).  On a treadmill I completely agree with this, on the trails it is easier to go without the music.  The bike, I will wear headphones on a spin bike and only a spin bike.  Once I am on my road bike forget it, it is way too much of a safety hazard.  To me it that isn’t a huge deal.  Now, what really needs music is swimming!  I have tried singing while I swim, but I almost drown! Thanks to H2O Audio that has been solved.  They have made this fabulous little thingy that you can put an iPod in and go swimming!  Now, you can’t just jump in the pool and you are good to go. Once you get everything situated you can start rocking you swim!

Every time I head out to the pool I have my handy swim bag with me.  Ok, yes, if you want to be frugal you can get away with just a swim suit.  But then your eyes get all red and the chlorine in your hair, and blah, blah, blah.  So I took a long hard look at my swim bag… I have my swim fins, Forearm Fulcrums, swim paddles, lap counter, GPS watch, Swim cap (or two), goggles, my H2O Audio thingy (which you can get cheaper at amazon.com), my little towel thingy.  Oh, and of course my swim workout book, pages are water proof and has a whole bunch of workouts listed.  Do I really need all this stuff??? Yea, I do!  Of course I do!

Today’s gym visit was wonderful!  I had some wardrobe issues while on the treadmill so I only did 30 minutes, I got lower body weight session in and the I decided it was time to try to drown myself in the pool, not really.  I enjoyed a comfortable mile in the pool.  My shoulder didn’t act up which made me so happy!

Tomorrow the goal is treadmill with upper body weights and then spin class.

Weight training 101

26 March 2012
I love spring break, I love spring break! For the next week I have buddies all day, every day! But that is fine! I have a gym membership and there is plenty of area for my kiddos to dispose of energy!  We had some appointments this morning so it was a little hectic (and didn’t get a chance to eat breakfast), after the appointments we headed off to the gym.  Cuervo is to young to come up into the cardio/weight area, so he hung out in the kiddo area (loved every minute of it).  Jose and I went upstairs and started off on the treadmill.  Then we did lower body weights, I have a lot of work to do with that kid! I kept having to tell him to stop staring at the TV.  I was doing my usual weight, for Jose I was only letting him work with 20(ish) pounds.  After lower body weights, we did some more cardio then some upper body weights.  After focusing more on Jose then my own workout (and the fact I didn’t have anything to eat yet) I figured it was time to get going.  I really wish they did not have TVs up in the weight area, but they do and Jose need to learn to pay attention to what he is doing instead of the TVs.  I think he and I are going to have a This is How You Use the Weight Machine lesson in the very near future (This weekend works for me!).
It is kind of weird… I am signed up for the Colorado Marathon, obviously I will be not running the full marathon (thanks to my back), but I am not sure I am really in the mood to do any of it.  I am just really not feeling it right now.  I am not saying no, yet; I am keeping up with my training, but I am just not feeling it at this point.  Oh well, I still have over a month before I have to make any decision!

Leap Day

7 March 2012
According to an old Irish legend, or possibly history, St Bridget struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propose to men – and not just the other way around – every 4 years. This is believed to have been introduced to balance the traditional roles of men and women in a similar way to how Leap Day balances the calendar.
In some places, Leap Day has been known as “Bachelors’ Day” for the same reason. A man was expected to pay a penalty, such as a gown or money, if he refused a marriage proposal from a woman on Leap Day. In many European countries, especially in the upper classes of society, tradition dictates that any man who refuses a woman's proposal on February 29 has to buy her 12 pairs of gloves. The intention is that the woman can wear the gloves to hide the embarrassment of not having an engagement ring. During the middle ages there were laws governing this tradition.

I know, Leap Day was a week ago now, but I have to admit something… Everyone who even knows me even a little bit understands not only do I like to color outside the lines, but I feel it is necessary to be a smart ass.  With that said I figured this year I would follow the Leap Day tradition and propose to someone.  I have known this person for almost a decade, they have been there when I have needed no nonsense unsugar coated advice.  This person is very important to me and if I were to actually get married again I could see myself spending rest of my life with this person.  When I sent them the proposal (yes, I did it via email [I am not sure this person knows not only what a phone is, but what it does!!!!]) I was well aware of their opinion of marriage, but I did it anyway! Not only did I not expect a positive response, I really didn’t expect any response at all! Realistically I am not exactly a prime catch. WAIT!!! Don’t get excited yet! I say this for once main reason… drama! Between my lupus, and my kids medical conditions we have anything but a normal and calm life.  I would not wish that much drama upon ANYONE! I told you I was a smart ass!
I was dragging a smidge this morning.  My eyes are being weird.  I can’t really focus both my eyes; I am fine if I am using one eye or the other, but once both eyes are open forget it.  I finally made it to the gym, happy news on the scale (tomorrow is my official weigh in day and I actually can’t wait!), then to the treadmill.  I took it kind of easy, but I got an enjoyable 2.7 miler in and then I did some lower body and core weights (I have swimming on the books tomorrow so I didn’t want to work my upper body).  Once I was done with all that I changed into my swim suite and hit the hot tub.  Awwww! Felt amazing.  On my way out I decided to splurge and had a wonderful salmon salad.

Tomorrow is an elliptical machine visit (might visit the treadmill, don’t know yet) and pool time!

You want me to do WHAT???

Here we are at Friday again.  This week started off REALLY rough, but rapidly improved!  I got three really good workouts in with two more to go.
Monday – I was flat on my back because of to much pain.
Tuesday – An amazing run/weights workout
Wednesday – Swimming JJJJ
Thursday – Pilates…  I had planned on going for a ride, BUT I had a very long day at work and I was tired AND my sister (who wasn’t coming home until late) had the key to the garage (where my bike just so happened to be).  So I was flying down the road to pick up Cuervo for gymnastics (yes, my son is in gymnastics and he was awesome at it!) and called the Y to see if they had any yoga classes available, they didn’t. BUT they had a Pilates class at the perfect time! I dropped Cuervo off (I am sorry, but I cannot deal with gymnastics moms, I can’t do it) and off to the Y I went.  I walked in and there were a whole two people in there (with 5 minutes until class started), the instructor introduced herself (nice lady), I set up my stuff and ran to the bathroom.  When class started there were a whopping three students (I was the youngest) and the preggo teacher!  I got one heck of a workout in but I felt so relaxed when I left.  During the class we were doing leg lifts and the instructor asked if anyone’s hip was popping and I was the only one!!!!! (read above “I was the youngest one there”) Anyway, like I said, wonderful class.  As I was heading to pick up Cuervo I got a call from him letting me know he was waiting outside the gym (I was a whole minute out).  Got home, let the puppies out, I was still tired from the long day at work, but I felt good. I was very glad I went! Oh! And yes, I fell off the ball at least once!
Today – REST! YAY!!!! Actually, today I will be heading to the new Rheumy (wish me luck!), then I will be stopping by the hospital to visit a very dear friend (please keep her in your prayers).
Saturday – group run – I am shooting for 3 – 4 miles, maybe 5, not sure I will play it by ear.
Sunday – should have been my century ride but (assuming my back is playing nice) I will be doing a 1/3 of the distance.  Since I have not been making it out on the bike like I should be I am shooting to keep it under 2 and a half hours.
Monday according to my tri training schedule is a rough swimming day (but I can’t wait!)
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.

10 more days!

Yesterday between work and Weight Watchers I managed to get a second workout in. I had planned on doing an additional three miles but I got out of work later than I had expected so I had to settle with 1.5.  I wanted to get weights in so I did ½ mile then a set of weights. Before I knew it was supposed to be at my meeting and I had only finished my upper body and 1.5 miles, put my mileage yesterday to a little over 5 miles.  I felt great! Since I was the only one in the gymlet I had the chance to think.  The past year has been pretty rough, but I have made it through with my head held up high.  Winning that entry into the Colorado Marathon made my entire month!  It was four years when I ran my very first full marathon and it was the Colorado Marathon. I went back the following year to complete my 5th marathon in a 12 month period (hey, it squeaked in by one day so it counts!). Due to my race schedule last year (and injuries) I was not able to run it. This year I really wanted to but it sold out to fast.  This weekend I have an 8 miler on the books, but I think it will be bumped up to a 10 miler, but I have been putting in some good miles on hills, plus I have 5 hours to finish.  A participant has 6 hours to complete the marathon and 5 hours to complete the half marathon. Walkers are welcome. No baby strollers or wheeled conveyances are allowed.” I would have almost 23 minutes per mile!!!!  I think I will do just fine! Because I am coming off the crud my plan is to do a nice run/walk I am thinking 4/1, but I am not sure yet. I will see how my runs go between now and then.
Tonight I am on full mommy duty “Mom! I have a science project due tomorrow!” We are doing the egg in the bottle experiment! We are going to see how small of an opening the bottle can have while keeping the egg intact! We are also going to see what happens when the egg still has its shell!!! Tomorrow I am taking a ME day! I plan on hitting Pikes Peak after dropping my boys off, going to lunch with a friend and who knows what else!
Saturday is another run in Garden of the Gods – gotta love hills!!!

Finals week caught up!

Yesterday after work I drove up to the Y to get a nice swim in. I get to the parking lot and it is packed! Spring Break, duh! I refuse to fight with kids in order to swim my laps. So I went home, changed and walked to my Weight Watchers meeting. I stopped by the gas station next door and got a bottle of water and then went for my weigh in. I am sad to report that finals week finally caught up with a 2 pound gain. But it happens and it is time to move on! After the meeting I walked home, well had to run some sections because I needed to be somewhere before 7 pm and the meeting ended at 6:30. Luckily I was able to text my sister and by the time I ran up to the house I was jumping in my car and taking off, everyone was where they needed to be buckled and ready to go. I pulled into the parking lot of Bicycle Village at 6:55!!!!! Talk about timing J

Colorado Springs Bicycle Village had their huge tent sale a few weeks ago and of course I went, I needed a few things (and wanted other things). The two things I needed were shoes and a helmet (see, they are needs). I went into the store a few days prior to the sale so I would know exactly what I wanted in the way of shoes. I have big wide feet; I know that, I understand that, I accept that. So I picked out a men’s pair of shoes, found the perfect size, I was good to go! The day of the sale they didn’t have my perfect size so I got the next size down, they fit, but after an 11 mile ride I knew I really wanted the next size up (they weren’t hurting, but I knew after about 70 miles my feet would not be happy). So Monday morning I called them up and told them what I wanted and mention my bike rack (Saris Bones 3-Bike) lost one of its feet. I was told the shoes have been ordered and to bring the rack in. So I really wanted to get in yesterday (I received the call telling me the shoes were in). I got my shoes, they moved my clips from the smaller pair to the larger pair, and they gave me a new foot for my bike rack (my back window will greatly appreciate that one!). A little back ground on Bicycle Village. I have been shopping there since 2007. They have a maintenance class but I was up able to make it prior to my first triathlon, so they told me to come on in and gave me a one-on-one lesson on how to change my tire and the basics. I take my bike in every year for her check up. A few years back shortly after her annual checkup I was out for a ride and my crank broke! I brought her in and just had to pay to parts, they did not charge labor because she had just been in. I have never had a bad experience with them. I have been up to the Bicycle Village in Aurora and Boulder, they are ok.

My new bike skirt from Skirt Sports will arrive today and I am so excited to take it out of a spin this weekend. It occurred to me that I own a ton of skirts from verity of companies. So, I figure over the next few weeks I will post my opinion of them, the good the bad and the possibly ugly!

Tuesday ranting and raving

Yesterday I was not feeling very well, I was tired and just not there. Before I went down to the gymlet I knew I would not really be running. I got on the elliptical machine and I was fighting a mile and a half into it (I got to 1.7 before getting off), so I decided I would try getting on the treadmill for my last 1.8 miles knowing I might not get my 3.5 in. I started off at a nice easy (slow) 3.5 pace. After a 10th of a mile I upped it to 3.6 and I kept upping it every 10th of a mile until I was done. At about 4.5 I was jog/walking, the last 10th I was supposed to be at 5.3 but I decided to up it to 6.0 to finish it off. I felt pretty good. I was still tired, but I was a little more invigorated. I got back to my desk only to deal with another blood sugar crash! As soon as I hit the locker room I started eating my apple sauce to try to prevent it from happening again. After work I had to take Charlie to the vet (nothing major, he just needed to visit a tech) got home, my sister made dinner and I was pretty much in bed right then and there. I was out cold well before 10 pm. This morning my alarm went off and my fur boys let me sleep a little more but then they decided just because I wasn’t getting out of bed yet doesn’t mean I can just lay there and do nothing. For the next 20 minutes I got squished, licked and stepped on every which way! Charlie was getting ready to lay down next to me when all of a sudden Freddie was walking under him and taking his place! When Charlie finally got to lay down next to me Freddie sat on him!

Yesterday I was screwing around on the Trek website and designed my dream tri bike. Eventually I would like one, I know how expensive they are, but it is always fun going to the Project One area and coming up with MY bike! Speaking of bikes… My century is about two months away. Did I mention at the bike sale I got a new seat too? Sorry, I think today is a SQUIRREL day! I finally got her out for a ride on Sunday and felt great! This weekend I plan on doing two loops on the Air Force Academy’s main road (pretty flat). By the end of next month I will be hitting the road near the outlets (a lot more hills)

Today will probably be a two session day. I got a good upper body workout in during lunch. BRC is having a group fun after work that I will try to make. I feel really good right now and if I am still feeling good around 4 pm, then I will do it, if not, I won’t! If I am not up to running I might hit the pool!

I have been ragging on Skirts Sports more than I should over the past few months. I have to say, I do like their running skirts (I would LOVE them if they would just put drawstrings in). Now, Skirt Sports isn’t just running skirts. Nicole DeBoom, Skirt Sports founder, is a triathlete and I have to say this give her company an serious edge when it comes to some of their products. During the expo of my first half ironman a running store had a booth set up and low and behold a Skirt Sports bike skirt was in their sale bin, so I got it! I know ‘you shouldn’t try anything new on race day’ well, my toosh was about to put on 56 miles and any extra padding I could get would be greatly appreciated! LOVED IT! Yes, my toosh was still a little sore at the end, but what do you expect? I am excited to be picking out a new outfit now that I am getting back on the bike (hey, a girl can always use motivation!). So, in the near future I will be getting the Short Sleeve Jersey (hopefully it runs a little lose, I don’t like tight stuff up top) and the Cruiser Bike Girl (a little longer than Breezer Bike Girl, which, to me, is always nice).

Here is to a beautiful day in Colorado!

5th Time

Last night I went in for the fifth time to pick up my race bib for the St. Patrick’s Day 5k. I am not saying I have done five 5K (I have done a heck of a lot more than that). This particular race holds a very near and dear spot for me. This was my very first 5K. My pace has stayed pretty much the same the entire time (ok, one year I was down to 32 minutes and then next I was up to 38 minutes). This year I will be happy if I stay under 40! This is a training run; I just recently got back into running after a hand full of month hiatus.

This will also be my 44th race since starting! (I told you I have done a few more 5Ks than just these five!!!). I might be somewhere around the same weight as I was when I started, but I am a completely different shape. Not to mention in most instances my health is a million times better!

Yesterday I got about an hour of cross training in. I did a warm-up and cool down on the elliptical machine with a good lower body weight session in between. This morning my hips are letting me know they got a good workout yesterday! J My obliques are talking to me too. It feels great! I have arranged with my sister to pick me up after my run this afternoon but I am not 100% sure I will be able to run outside today. Talk about windy! I think I heard on the news this morning we are having gusts of over 50 mph. Driving around this morning my poor little car couldn’t stay where I wanted it to. And then walking about side I had to hold onto everything for dear life! Not that it is a huge deal if I don’t make it, I think I could suffer through a Sunday morning run!

Next week will be on the entertaining side because it is finals week. I took the picture with my cell phone of a rendered image of my final project. I am taking a 3D animation class (gotta love getting a degree in visual communications!!!!). I need to finish my Farris wheel from hell (as far as I am concerned all Farris wheels are from hell, I hate the damn things!). And I have a few more things to finish up and then I am done with this quarter! YAY!!! This weekend into next week gets bumpy.

Here is to my 5th running of the St Patrick’s Day 5K and keep my insanity during finals week!

OH! And Bicycle Village is having their HUGE sale this weekend in Colorado Springs!

Mismatched shoes, no towel...

For the most part over the past week I had been really good on the training and eating front. I was pretty excited to go to my Weight Watcher’s meeting last night. Once again, I had a 2.4 pound loss goal set when I walked in.

Wednesday started off kind of sluggish. I knew I was not going to be able to get my workout in until after work, but that meant I would have close to two hours of swimming if I wanted! On the books was 45 – 60 minutes of cross training. Well, my running stuff was in the laundry (to include my workout bras) so getting on the bike was out the window and quite frankly a nice swim sounded so good! So, the pool it was!

I have to say when it comes to workouts this week, things have been a little backwards. Monday was wear mismatched shoes and yesterday was go swimming without a towel! And, no, not having a towel did not stop me! To make matters even more entertaining the guy in the lane next to me, I guess, decided I needed tri swimming practice and hit me every time we swam by me. If it were the guy in the same lane as me, I could understand but not the a$$ hole in the lane next to me! I love Tyr swimsuits, but their goggle suck! Mine kept leaking. But hey, I did a mile in 40 minutes even with all those issues, so I am not to unhappy (that was the first mile I have swam in a while).

After my swim had fun getting dressed while soaking wet, I pulled on some running pants and a t-shirt and headed over to Weight Watchers. I made sure I got the lead (she is so sweet) and found out that she, too, will be doing Tri for the Cure this summer. It is her first triathlon, I am so excited for her! Oh, yea, my weight. Well, I didn’t lose the 2.4 I had hoped for but I did lose 1.4 so I am happy!

Because of the 5K on Saturday I need to move some sessions around. I figured today’s 4-miler will be the 5K (I am sure I can get in an extra .9 on Saturday!), so today I think I will hit the weights (so Friday’s session moves to today). The 6-miler will either need to be tomorrow after work OR on Sunday. Either way I will be able to hit the trails, which is always nice!

Sore

My weigh in last night didn’t quiet go as well as planned, I put on .2 pounds. At first I was a little let down but then I started thinking. I had been weighing in first thing in the morning; no food, no water, no nothing for 8+ hours prior to being weighed in. Yesterday I ate my normal breakfast, lunch and snacks. I went for a run, I consumed a significant amount of water. So a .2 pound gain? I can live with that. Next week, however will be different!

With that said and done I woke up this morning and my upper body was sore! I laid in bed smiling. Ok, so I have planned on hitting the bike during lunch but I didn’t feel like it. So I did some good upper body weights. I felt great! After work, I made it for my run. Styling my new Preppy Pink Running Capri from Runningskirts.com I selected a point on my favorite trail and headed north and then came back. I realized I wasn’t pushing as much as I could, but I felt good. I was a little slower than I was on Monday (I think I was tired at first), but I was out there and enjoying everything.

Today is a 3.5 – 4 mile run; sadly I have class tonight so I have to hit the treadmill for this run during lunch. I guess I can’t get all my miles outside.

Day 3 (10% done!!!!)

When I got home last night I was COLD! Cuervo was curled up in his chair and Jose was on my bed and they were watching TV, my poor sister was in her room sick as can be. She came up to greet me and told me my boys had been really good all day. They watched TV and when they needed something they would come talk to her, otherwise they left her alone (they are amazing at doing that). Before I did anything else I got changed and hit play! The first round of jumping jacks I realized my calves for one heck of a workout on Monday! Freddie and Charlie tried to help me again. This time Freddie figured I need help staying up so he stood under my upper chest while I was trying to do push-ups. My sister came and rescued me! I was able to finish my workout (my knee played nice, thank goodness). Then it was dinner time. Quesadillas! I did have two, but I measured everything out. I only had a little bit of fat free cheese, and I did stack on the lettuce and cilantro, some no salt black beans and some other stuff. I thought I had made good choices, that is until I figured out the calories! According to Body Bugg and entering in everything I did eat yesterday I still came out without any issues. I was just shy of my goal calories in for the day. Monday it looks like I was way lower than I was supposed to be. I can now see where I am falling to short or going to far over. I figure 100 calories either way is manageable.

This morning I was back on schedule. I figured out how to get out of bed and Cuervo decided it was necessary to sleep in my room again (I think he just likes sleeping in his chair [it is one of those big round ones] and Charlie has no issues climbing up into the chair with him!). When I got out of bed Cuervo had packed up his chair and got it out of my way so I was able to get right into it. I hit play and again my calves started asking me what the heck I thought I was doing! This time during push-ups Freddie came over and started giving me kisses every time I came up. Then he decided it was play time with Charlie so they went outside. I have been doing the 30-day shred without weights, I am hoping to get to the store to pick up some dumbbells tonight. I don’t think I will need anything more than 3 – 5 pounds (for now). With my shoulder not back to 100% yet, this workout is great, it is not to strenuous on it but it does work out.

New bike pants (don’t worry, I did laundry Monday night) + running skirt (put on backwards [oops]) = perfect combo. My boss was in the gymlet today and I was so glad I had my skirt on. I am sure he wouldn’t have cared, but I would not have been able to get a good ride in trying to fix the back of my pants (they don’t go WAY down, but they are further down than I am happy with). After chatting with my boss for 5 minutes I got into my ride. Little hilly (nothing like what I am going to need for Elephant Rock – stayed between levels 5 – 9 with RPMS between 87 – 95).
